The automotive industry has reported another reduction in the number of job vacancies.
The Institute of the Motor Industry’s (IMI) latest Vacancy Rate Tracker for May 2024 found that the reduction from 4.1 to 3.7 vacancies for every 100 employees has taken the sector out of the top spot for the highest number of open posts.
Motor trade vacancies have now fallen slightly behind the hospitality sector where there are 3.9 vacancies per 100 employees. The IMI believes there is still a long way to go.
Having dropped by 0.2% on the previous month and 0.8% compared with the same period in 2023, the automotive industry now has approximately 21,000 vacancies, across more than 200 varied roles.
Emma Carrigy, Research Manager at the IMI said: “The peaks and troughs in the rate of vacancies within the automotive sector has generally followed the average trends of all sectors.
“Our recovery post-pandemic has, however, been slower than average. While it is encouraging to be able to report ongoing reductions in the rate of vacancies in recent months the automotive workforce remains under-resourced, and new apprenticeships are not adequately filling the pipeline of new talent. As a result, the sector – and road users – are at serious risk. “
