AutoTrader names used cars that surged and plummeted in value in past year

Amidst an uptick in consumer demand, AutoTrader shares data revealing the used cars experiencing price growth and the used cars experiencing price contractions.

The data, based on cars of all fuel types, draws comparison between prices from February 2023 and February 2024.

Richard Walker, data and insights director at AutoTrader, said: “February was another positive month for the used car market – demand was strong, stock sold quickly, and more cars were sold than last year.

“It’s disappointing therefore that retail prices were below where we would expect them to be given the otherwise very robust market health.

“Wholesale values are improving, and the number of vehicles being underpriced is falling, but still too many retailers are being guided by trade rather than retail, and the result is an unnecessary erosion of margin.”

Used cars that have risen in value include the Suzuki Jimny with an asking price and price change of £12,676 and 11.2% YoY, respectively.

Also included on the list were the Jeep Grand Cherokee (£16,350, 7.8%) Volkswagen Beetle (£7,665, 7%), Hyundai i30 (£10,327, 4.7%), Audi RS4 Avant (£44,283, 3.9%), Volvo V70 (£7,293, 2.8%), Porsche Cayman (£31,400, 2.8%), Mercedes-Benz M Class (£11,411, 2.2%), Volkswagen up! (£8,413, 2.1%) and the Toyota Land Cruiser (£32,625, 2%).

Used cars that have declined in value include the Toyota Prius+ with an asking price and price change of £18,682 and -24.7%, respectively.

Also included on the list were the Tesla Model S (£28,812, -24.5%), Mazda MX-30 (£19,438, -24%), Tesla Model X (£41,650, -23.9%), DS automobiles DS 3 Crossback (£14,629, -23.9%), Hyundai IONIQ (£14,782, -23.8%), Nissan Leaf (£14,136, -23.6%), Volkswagen ID.3 (£23,816, -23.3%), Renault Zoe (£11,915, -23.1%) and Fiat 500e (£18,994, -22.4%).
