A number of top selling cars have official combined fuel figures which significantly fall below their real-world consumption, according to data released by What Car?
The consumer magazine launched a True MPG service in April which it said would determine the real-world fuel consumption of new cars.
Cars to fall below their claimed figures are the Volkswagen Up High 1.0 at 46.9mpg, (60.1mpg); Volkswagen Polo 1.2 Match 39.5mpg (51.4mpg), BMW X1 2.0d S Drive at 50.8mpg (62.8mpg) and the Mini Cooper S at 40.2mpg (48.0mpg).
What Car? said its tests use special measuring equipment over a series of prescribed test routes.
Two vehicles exceeded their claimed consumption: the Ford S-Max 2.0 TDCI Duratorq Titanium X Sport at 47.7 (47.0 ) and Peugeot 5008 2.0 FAP HDI Allure 51.5mpg (51.3mpg).
