Dealers lose out on servicing

Consumers continue to cut back on servicing as the cost of motoring rockets in the UK.

That’s the result of a survey for Manheim Auctions of 3,000 motorists carried out by One Poll.

The survey revealed a fifth of motorists think servicing their car is a “complete waste of money” and have admitted to only doing so when they can afford it, rather than when recommended.

The survey follows a recent report from Trend Tracker which revealed that for the first time in almost 20 years there has been an increase in the proportion of motorists servicing and maintaining their own cars.

DIY car maintenance last year equated to £300m-worth (excluding VAT) of lost work for professional workshops, with franchised outfits losing out most,  according to the 2011 Castrol Professional Car Service and Repair Trend Tracker

It also found franchised dealers continue to lose work to independent garages.

Dealers’ share of the service, maintenance and repair market fell to 21.8 per cent last year from 23.3 per cent in 2005.

Over the same period the share of service, maintenance and repair work taken by independent garages has grown from 47.5 per cent in 2005 to 53.8 per cent in 2010.
