Drivers four times more likely to purchase hybrid than pure electric

Drivers are nearly four times more likely to purchase a petrol or diesel hybrid as their next car than a full EV, says AA Cars.

The company surveyed over 11,000 British motorists reveals 27% are considering buying a hybrid vehicle, compared to 7% who intend to go fully electric.

James Hosking, Director of AA Cars, said: “Hybrids are a popular car for drivers looking to reduce their environmental impact without fully committing to electric cars. These vehicles blend traditional combustion engines with electric power, offering an accessible middle ground for those transitioning to a greener mode of transport.

“Hybrids also serve as an easy introduction to electric technology, helping drivers gain confidence before fully switching to EVs. As more electric models become available in both the new and used car markets, and charging networks expand, the demand for eco-friendly vehicles will continue to rise.

“Hybrids are playing a crucial role in this shift, bridging the gap between traditional and fully electric cars, and paving the way for widespread EV adoption.”

SMMT figures show that hybrid car sales rising by 36% and battery EV sales increasing by 11% YoY in August.

Newer models are resulting in better value-for-money. In the second-hand car market, more options and competitive pricing are making vehicles accessible to a wider range of consumers.

According to AA Cars’ latest Used Car Index, the average price of popular used electric and hybrid vehicles in the UK dropped by 19% in Q2 compared to the same period last year.

Hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Yaris, Toyota Prius and Honda Jazz are in the top 20 most popular options on the AA Cars platform.
