Research by Kwik-Fit found that 12.5 per cent of drivers do not service their vehicle on a regular basis and 2 per cent never carry out a service.

David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit, said: “While MoTs check a car’s roadworthiness once a year, regular maintenance and servicing is just as important.

“Spending a hundred pounds or so on a service can often avoid huge bills later on.”

The survey also found that the majority of motorists are more organised and carry out regular vehicle checks.

Over 12.5 million car owners (40 per cent) follow the manufacturer’s recommended service intervals and 11 million (36 per cent) service their cars on an annual basis.
