Ex-Tesco Cars managing director Douglas Rotberg is now heading up TootCompare, a comparison site for car servicing and MOTs.
The independent site enables motorists to compare prices from 10,000 franchised dealers and independent garages. Customers enter their car registration and their postcode and TootCompare provides a breakdown of the car service providers in the area from its database.
Customers can browse the list by price, quality or location. They then select the garage and book through the site but do not pay until the work is carried out.
If a consumer makes a booking through the website and the garage conducts the work, there is a fixed fee of £8 if it is an MoT only booking
The alternative is 10% of any service or service and Mot combination although this commission only applies to the advertised fixed price service.
Any up-sales – if a vehicle fails an MoT and the garage does extensive repairs for example – do not attract any additional charges.
Douglas Rotberg, chief executive of TootCompare, said: “Motorists can use TootCompare to search and compare the best MOT and servicing prices locally, from franchised dealers, independents and garages.”
Rotberg was managing director of Carsite for over 10 years until it was bought by Tesco and rebranded as Tesco Cars, which he also managed.
It closed in March 2012 after the supermarket giant pulled the plug saying it could not provide customers with a “satisfactory” range of cars.
