F1 review: British Grand Prix 2010

f1_picBelieve it or not, we are half way through the 2010 Championship already and it’s the race we’ve all been waiting for. The British Grand Prix at Silverstone didn’t disappoint. The sun was out, the crowd passionate and lively and there was enough action, controversy and drama to almost forget the English debacle in the World Cup.

Red Bull, Red Bull
The front row of the grid had a familiar feel to it, with Red Bull occupying the top two positions, with Vettel on pole. Alonso started in third, Hamilton struggled to fourth on the grid while Button languished down in fourteenth.

Chances punctured
The first lap was a hectic affair, with Button immediately advancing his position in the race, while Webber snatches the lead straight away from team mate Vettel. As a consequence of attempting to regain the lead, the German driver suffers a puncture which effective ended any chance of a decent finish. Hamilton takes advantage of this along with Alonso’s poor start to take second place.

Alonso’s race goes from bad to worse when he receives a drive through penalty for an incident with Kubica, which needless to say he isn’t all that happy about. Radio silence is demanded by Alonso. This leaves the Spaniard at the wrong end of the race and will probably allow him to turn his attention to the game later on tonight where he fellow countrymen take on the Dutch. He still may have something to cheer about.

The British charge
While Webber is dominating the race, Button is scything his way through the field and it’s not long until he is right up into fourth place, behind the Mercedes of Rosberg. Meanwhile another galloping through the positions is Vettel who has gone from the back of the grid up into the points.

Webber wins
Webber keeps his mind on the race and holds onto the lead, claiming the British Grand Prix. The impressive Hamilton finishes second with Rosberg in his Mercedes completing the podium. Jenson Button manages to gain 10 places and finishes in fourth. Barrichello crosses the line in an excellent fifth place closely followed by Kobayashi who must be ecstatic to finish in the top six.

The good, the bad and the Alonso
So while it is definitely Mark Webber’s day, it is McLaren who are still in the lead in both the Driver’s and Constructor’s Championships and they must be very pleased to finish second and fourth. Plaudits should also go to Vettel for achieving seventh place and Barrichello, and Kobayashi for excellent races. Not much joy for Alonso or the disappointing Schumacher, who was completely outraced by team mate, Rosberg.

Off to Germany we go in two weeks time.
