IMI compiles ‘Wish List’ for next Government

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has compiled a ‘Wish List’, addressing automotive vacancy rates, skills, education and technologies, in hope that the next Government will ensure the industry is central to manifestos.

Automotive accounted for around 866,000 jobs and £37 billion gross value added to the UK economy in 2023. A qualified workforce with access to further training continuously trained is vital as the industry contributes to economic and social stability.

Steve Nash, CEO of the IMI, said: “There is a clear opportunity for the next Government to learn from the past and provide the support and infrastructure that will ensure UK automotive remains a global leader, as well as give UK motorists and businesses confidence.”

In terms of education, the  training workforce is severely under-resourced and the pipeline of new talent is not being filled by new apprenticeships. The IMI is calling for infrastructure and pathways to improve the level of educators/trainers.

The sector also needs to be upskilled to work on ADAS, EVs to avoid a postcode lottery on access to these advances, says the IMI.

With the skills gap widening, the IMI highlights the importance of financial support for recruitment, training and resources, particularly for SMEs.

The IMI wants the next Government to implement policies that inform consumers on the importance of using qualified technicians. It also wants MOT fit for ADAS equipped vehicles and all drive trains.

Future policy should acknowledge the importance of data protection, privacy, and cybersecurity issues in terms of vehicle ownership and usage, says the IMI.

Nash added: “The IMI has worked hard to engage with all political parties over the last few years to ensure there is a good understanding of what’s needed to keep UK motorists and road users safe.

“The knowledge and expertise has been provided and we very much hope the next Government will place the right emphasis on automotive.”
