New SsangYong Rexton SUV makes its debut in October

SsangYong dealers will start selling the fourth-generation Rexton in October.

Priced from £27,500, the brand’s flagship SUV is being marketed as a value proposition new vehicle and an alternative to buying used.

SsangYong points out that its model is priced at around 10% less than an equivalent Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorento and at a similar cost to a three or four-year old Land Rover Discovery.

First unveiled as the LIV-2 concept at the Paris Motor Show in September 2016, the fourth-generation Rexton promises improvements in quality, equipment and technology.

Advances include a 9.2-inch high definition navigation screen with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto smartphone capability, 3D Around View monitoring and in top-spec Ultimate models quilted Nappa leather upholstery.

The car offers all-wheel-drive format only and with body-on-frame construction. These attributes and the vehicle’s 3-5-tonne towing capability are expected to continue to appeal to those who need a robust SUV for true off-road use.

The Rexton retains the 2.2-litre turbodiesel of its predecessor, offering 181PS and maximum torque of 420Nm. This is put through either a six-speed manual or seven-speed auto transmission, the latter sourced from Mercedes-Benz.

Combined-cycle fuel economy ranges from 36.2 to 34.0mpg and CO2 emissions from 204 to 218g/km depending on which of the three trim levels is selected.

According to SsangYong Motor UK CEO Paul Williams, the new Rexton represents evidence of the significant investments made in the company’s regeneration by owner Mahindra, being the second addition to an all-new line-up following on from the Tivoli.

He adds that more versions of the model are on the way. “SsangYong is committed to introducing a new car every year for the next three years, which includes a pick-up truck derived from Rexton early in 2018.  The company is also focused on creating further growth by developing petrol powered, EV and other eco-friendly vehicles.”
