Nissan sheds 1,200 UK jobs
Nissan will cut 1,200 jobs at its Sunderland plant, representing nearly a quarter of its workforce. The union Unite’s joint general secretary, Derek Simpson, said: “It is absolutely crucial that these workers’ skills are not lost. The economy will improve and when it does Nissan will need these workers again.” Nissan said it is also trimming one shift from each production line at the plant to avoid over-supply.
HR Owen sells Volvo sites
HR Owen has sold its Volvo dealerships to Regent Automotive for £186,000. All four sites are based in London. The business lost £19,000 before tax in the first half of 2008.
E&M goes digital
Exchange & Mart is to cease publishing its print edition, opting to become a solely online business. The website features almost 1,700 businesses on its dealer locator and lists 124,000 used cars.
SMA buys Premier
Scottish Motor Auctions has bought Premier Motor Auctions in Leeds for an undisclosed sum. The auction house had been in negotiations with potential buyers including Manheim before the December sale.
