The National Franchised Dealer Association (NFDA) has released a manifesto ahead of the General Election, taking place on 4 July. The manifesto lists ways that the UK Government can support automotive retail.
Sue Robinson, Chief Executive of the NFDA, has described the automotive sector as “one of the pillars of the UK economy.
Robinson said: “Automotive retailers employ 78% of the 758,000 people working in the sector, which sees a turnover of around £100 billion.
“As we approach the UK General Election, due to take place on 4 July 2024, NFDA is pleased to announce the launch of our comprehensive manifesto, outlining a vision for the future of automotive retail and the wider industry.”
The seven key ‘asks’ include the restimulating of the private EV market, an overhaul of the flawed apprenticeship levy, mandated annual public chargepoint targets and a clear plan for future road pricing.
The remaining asks relate to the removal of unfair regulations for heavier electric vans, an increase of HGV MOT capacity through delegated testing, and bringing down business rates.
Robinson said: “Our manifesto recognises the transformative changes sweeping through our sector as the UK transitions towards the electrification of its parc whilst addressing core challenges such as the ongoing skills shortage.
“The next few years will be crucial for our industry, and it is essential that the next government works with the sector and offers robust support on these key issues.”
