Regional distribution of EV charging infrastructure in the UK is uneven, with Northern Ireland having the lowest level of charging provision, according to Zapmap figures shared by the Department for Transport.
Data recorded by Zapmap observed the number of publicly available EV chargers between January and March 2024.
Northern Ireland only had 29 chargers per 100,000 people. The North West and Yorkshire and the Humber each had 53. London and Scotland had the highest level of charging provision, with 221 and 93 chargers.
The average provision of EV charging infrastructure in the UK is 89 per 100,000 people. Some UK local authorities have bid for UK government funding and others have not.
As of 1 April 2024, there were 59,670 public electric vehicle charging devices installed in the UK. Representing 19% of charging devices, 11,590 had 50kW of power while 35,339 (3kW to 8kW) represent 59% of all charging devices.
Representing 46% of chargers, 27,538 were considered destination chargers while 22,199 on street chargers represent 37% of all chargers.
Compared to 1 January 2024, the latest figures demonstrate an increase in total installed chargers of 5,993 (11%). Compared to this time last year, the total number of installed chargers has increased by 19,520 (49%).
