The House of Lords has warned of weaknesses in the charging infrastructure in the UK.
The House of Lords Science and Technology Committee warned of demand side risks from too many people charging their cars at the same time.
“There could …be demand-side risks, such as a “run on the plugs”, for example if a much higher than normal number of drivers decide to charge their electric vehicles simultaneously due to concerns over supply.”
The warning was given in a new report from the committee, “Long-duration energy storage: get on with it.”
“Long-duration storage facilities can take 7–10 years to build and require up-front capital investment. Developers need a clear business case, supporting infrastructure such as grid connections, and financial support in order to invest.
The Government has a goal to decarbonise the electricity system by 2035. If long-duration storage is to scale up in time, it is clear that construction needs to start as soon as possible. The Committee is concerned that this is not being treated with sufficient urgency,” it said.
“Time is running out for the UK to secure that brighter future. We urge the Government to take action now.”
