In days of yore men really were men and sports really were sports – there were none of these modern day namby-pamby ball-based games played by sissies. If you wanted to pass a Saturday afternoon pleasurably, you had to slap on the armour, sharpen up the lance and joust it out. Like men. Quite why Toyota decided to wheel out this ancient pastime to advertise its Rav 4 we may never know but let’s thank our lucky stars they did. A classic clip! “Every Loser Wins” sang erstwhile 80’s soap/pop combo legend Nick Berry but unfortunately no-one told this hapless rally fool. As the voiceover says: “He’s cruising to victory and he’s not afraid to pump his fist in the air, he’s talented enough to lead the race but he’s not talented enough to drive with one hand… that’s just unbelievably embarrassing.” So good they show it twice. Sticking with the pop theme, the term ‘Sunday driver’ has never been more apt than in this next clip. How hard can it be to drive your car into a garage and avoid sticking the wheels down the mechanic’s pit? Very, if you’re the horrendous driver behind the wheel of this motor that’s now going to be twice as expensive to repair.
