Sir Arnold Clark, founder of Arnold Clark Automobiles, has died aged 89.
Sir Arnold started the company, now Europe’s biggest independently-owned car retailer, in 1954 as a single showroom in Glasgow. As a talented entrepreneur he built the business into a £3.4bn annual turnover group with 200 sites in Scotland and England.
The business has a significant used car business, extensive property interests and operates 40 accident repair centres and 13 parts centres.
His family released a statement on his passing: “Sir Arnold Clark passed away peacefully this morning, 10 April 2017, surrounded by his family. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and a great friend and employer to many.
“He was an inspiration and the family will continue to carry on his vision. He will be greatly missed. We wish to thank all those who have sent messages of condolence and appreciate your kind support. We ask for privacy at this difficult time to allow the family to grieve.”
Arnold Clark Automobiles released a statement paying testimony to the man and his work and extending condolences to his family.
“Sir Arnold was a truly inspirational business leader and influential public figure. His unsurpassed work ethic and strong family values led him to build a market-leading automotive retailer that continues to go from strength to strength. Sir Arnold’s entrepreneurial ideals continue to be at the heart of the business.
“His personal philosophies will continue to inspire everybody who works in the business, and will be the cornerstone of its future growth and continuing success. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.”
Sir Arnold founded his business after leaving the Royal Air Force and using his demob money to buy a Morris Ten Four for just £70. The car was restored and sold for a profit. It was the start of an illustrious career.
Today Arnold Clark Automobiles today is rated four in the Motor Trader Top 200 with annual turnover of £3.4bn.
