Smart FourTwo gets crash rating

The Smart Fortwo supermini has received four out of five stars in Euro Ncap’s adult occupant protection rating, but only managed two out of four stars for its pedestrian protection rating.

With no rear seats, the Fortwo was not assessed for child protection.

Meanwhile, the Mercedes Car Group unveiled an all-in finance, insurance and maintenance package last month.

The carmaker claimed the new initiative would overturn the loss-making experience of the original Smart operation, which it blamed on the previous infrastructure behind the business rather than on any flaws in the product.

“Now Smart has been dovetailed into the Mercedes infrastructure from the very beginning of the new project and costs have been shared throughout the whole operation we expect Smart to be profitable,” said Ian Dutfield, Mercedes Car group marketing director.
