Vertu Motors, a partner of the Somerset County Cricket Club, has made a £5,000 donation to Somerset Cricket Foundation’s Walking Cricket initiative.
The donation will enable Somerset Cricket Foundation to launch two new hubs in Somerset. The programme brings together individuals of all ages and abilities to offer an accessible form of the sport in order to promote physical health, mental well-being and social interaction.
Robert Forrester, CEO of Vertu Motors, said: “We are delighted to support the Walking Cricket initiative, a brilliant adaptation of the classic game, which opens up opportunities for older and less mobile individuals to stay active and connected.
“This aligns perfectly with our ethos at Vertu Motors, where community and inclusivity are at the heart of what we do. Our contribution is not just a donation; it’s an investment in the health and happiness of the community.”
Seven hubs already exist and over 100 players have registered, of which 35% are female. The programme predominantly caters to those aged between 66 and 80.
A special Inclusion demonstration event is scheduled later in the year as a part of the Somerset vs Derbyshire One Day Cup game at the Coopers Associates County Ground. The event will feature members from the seven Walking Cricket hubs, showcasing their skills.
Jon Bendle, MD of Somerset Cricket Foundation said: “We’re delighted and extremely grateful to Vertu Motors for their generous donation.
“Our Walking Cricket Programme has seen significant growth over the past 12 months and is one of flagship programmes across our community work streams.
“It’s demonstrating great social impact and genuine betterment to people’s lives: it’s connecting communities, developing friendships, and keeping people active.
“We look forward to developing a strong partnership with Vertu Motors over the next 12 month and into the future.”
