Porsche reveals prices and specs for 718 Cayman

Porsche_718_Cayman_620Porsche has revealed prices and specs for the brand’s big-selling mid-engined coupe, the 718 Cayman.

The fourth-generation Cayman is a mid-life refresh of the existing model, and follows the unveiling in January of its roadster sister the 718 Boxster.

Both adopt the 718 title, recalling a classic model first made by Porsche in the late 1950s and a winner of numerous races in the 1950s and 1960s.

For the first time the Cayman is priced below the Boxster, starting from £39,878 for the standard model and £48,834 for the S model.

Both Cayman and Boxster share the same mechanical specification and in the new models this means more power, both petrol engines increased by 25hp over their outgoing equivalents.

The 2-litre unit offers 300hp while the S version of the Cayman is fitted with a 2.5-litre engine of 350hp.

This makes use of a variable geometry turbine with a wastegate that Porsche said is the only example in a turbo petrol production car.

As a result torque is improved across the entire engine speed range, translating to a best 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds.

Both powertrains claim fuel economy improvements of up to 13 per cent, to 40.9 and 34.9 mpg respectively.

Alongside the extra power comes a revised chassis, with firmer springs and anti-roll bars, changes to the damper settings and uprated brakes. The steering has also been reconfigured to be 10 per cent more direct while the rear wheels are half an inch wider.

Visually the car has undergone extensive modifications to create a more sculpted look, with a wider and sharper nose design, larger air intakes, Bi-xenon headlamps and daytime running lights. The wheel arches are redesigned, as are the side sills, larger side air intakes added and the rear given a wider look to match that of the front.

The interior has been given a complete revamp with a new upper section to the dash, and the latest Porsche Communication Management (PCM) touchscreen-based infotainment and connectivity added as standard. The navigation module is on the options list.

First UK deliveries of the new Cayman models are expected in September.
